LONDON WEDDING FLORIST
This week’s blog post is from London Wedding Florist Kate, of Fern and Blooms. Kate and I first worked together at Hunton Park Hotel, a fabulous stately home wedding venue and hotel in London, where we created a gorgeous styled shoot to showcase our creative talents!
Originating from Zimbabwe, Kate’s style is vibrant and full of colour. After very many happy years spent in her parents garden, surrounded by fragrant climbing plants and luscious wild foliage, floristry was an obvious career choice for Kate. Having trained at the Cambridge Flower School, Kate creates beautiful and sophisticated floral arrangements, working closely with her clients to ensure she brings their vision to life.
Here are Kate’s top tips on how to chose your wedding flowers
Seasons & Inspiration
Flowers are the perfect way to add colour, fragrance and texture into your wedding. With so many flowers to choose from, there are some flowers which are not available in some seasons. This is an important consideration that is often overlooked by newly engaged brides. With the wonderful world of Pinterest, it can be too easy to find and obsess over your dream flowers without stopping to think about the availability of your favourite blooms. We are lucky enough to have beautiful flowers in bloom each season here in the UK – from Cherry blossoms, peonies, delphiniums to dahlias and a lot of gorgeous blooms in between.
It is very important to discuss the budget with your florist and your wedding planner. Understanding your budget allows your florist to create the very best wedding bouquet and floral arrangements possible. It also enables your wedding florist to advise the best way to spend your budget without compromising on your vision. The cost includes more than just the physical cost of your flowers; the time spent on design, conditioning, onsite installation and removal of flowers the next day are all costs that must be factored into your budget.
Your Wedding Venue
Knowing the layout of your wedding venue will allow you to showcase your flowers in the best possible way. Having an understanding of where there is the most natural light or understanding if your flowers will be in direct heat (for example if you have a marquee wedding) will be helpful information to share with your florist.
Picking your Florist
Not only is it important to choose a florist who’s style you admire, but it is also important to choose a florist that you get on with and who understands your ideas and visions. A face to face meeting with your florist is invaluable and will enable you to discuss ideas and inspiration. Take along your ipad and share your Pinterest board, or ask your wedding planner to create a moodboard on your behalf that you can share with your florist.
